Your domain name is how the world knows you and finds you. It is front and center of every type of interaction with your business, site or organization.

Great business names are distinctive, differentiating you from every other business in the world.

Trusted

If you want people to interact with your site and business, they must trust it. Your name plays an important part in achieving that trust.

Memorable

It must be easy for a potential client or customer to remember your name. That is also important for social sharing.

Good Fit

Before you start searching for a name, ask yourself the tone that you want. Do you want your name to feel creative, lively, conservative, or something else.

Anyone can create a name, although with hundreds of millions of names registered, it is not as easy as you might think. Let's first look at elements of a name. A truly created domain name makes you distinctive, but may still not be the right choice if it is a name that is difficult for clients to remember and share.

TLD (extension)

You have literally more than a thousand possible extensions, with many more on the way. Extensions are called TLDs, Top Level Domains. The most familiar ones are .com, .net and .org, and that familiarity is one consideration. The TLD impacts several of the aspects we considered earlier, especially trust and fit.

TLD Choice

While .com brings highest familiarity and respect, odds are unless your budget is very high, you will need to compromise on the name itself to get the matching .com. Other extensions can also say something about who you are, like .ai for artificial intelligence companies and services, or .vc can signal a venture capital, .app an application, .xyz a decentralized service, and so on.

SLD

In the lingo of domain names, the SLD, or Second Level Domain name, is what we normally consider the name. In the domain name Example.com, Example is the SLD and .com the TLD. You should not look at either in isolation, both are important. Only you can decide what tradeoff makes sense to use a different TLD in order to obtain the preferred SLD.

Exact Match

You should strive to have your domain name an exact match for your company name. It helps if you get your ultimate domain name as early in your startup road as possible. There are numerous options to make do when your exact maatch is not available, but you will probably eventually regret most of them.
